Advocacy and Policy Programme

Our Approach to Advocacy

“Advocacy” is about providing an independent and skilled service to represent and promote the rights of children and young people in care.

IAYPIC is committed to advocating for change in policy, legislation and practice to ensure better outcomes for children and young people in care and aftercare.

Advocacy ensures that the services that children and young people receive are appropriate and take into account their age, level of understanding, gender, race, religion, culture, heritage, language and physical and mental health.

IAYPIC employs a dedicated Advocacy and Policy Officer whose roles include:

  • Raising awareness of issues and concerns affecting children and young people in care/aftercare and inform key decision makers in this area.
  • Using research findings and experiences shared by young people in care/aftercare to speak credibly on their behalf for changes at a local, regional and national level.
  • Working in partnership with other relevant agencies such as the Irish Foster Care Association to influence change for children and young people in care/aftercare.
  • Lobbying for change and improvements in the provision and quality of care services at a local, regional and national level in Ireland, whilst continuing to develop effective partnerships with the HSE and other agencies working in the best interests of young people in care.
