Exam Advice

Stop worrying.  Everyone worries about exams, it’s perfectly normal.  We worry because we don’t know exactly what will be asked.  The fear of the unknown causes great insecurities within us. When studying for exams here are some things to take into consideration.

Manage your studying

Don’t go mad and lock yourself in with your books 24 hours a day.  Two to three hours is the amount of time you can study before you stop really absorbing what you read.  Trying to learn too much at once is like overstuffing a bag, everything will fall out and you won’t be able to retain it all.So take breaks regularly.

Learn to relax

People relax in different ways.  For some physical exercise is a way of relaxing.  In fact keeping fit is a good idea when studying as the brain needs extra oxygen to keep us alert and the memory sharp.  For others chilling out and listening to music or reading a book works for them.  When you are more relaxed you retain information better.  So, try different things to find what works for you.

Don't forget to Sleep

Exam stress sometimes makes sleeping difficult.  So, set a definite time to go to bed and don’t be tempted to stay up late cramming.  Listening to some gentle music, a light snack or a glass of milk and a warm bath will help you relax and have a better night’s sleep.

Know your limits

If your expectations of yourself are always sky high you will inevitably spend a great deal of time being disappointed and frustrated.  Instead be realistic in what you can achieve and don’t forget to celebrate your successes, no matter how small.

Talk

If things feel like they're getting on top of you, perhaps you could do one of the easiest things of all, talk. Speak to someone you trust, your parents, teacher or friend.  Sometimes just talking it through with someone will help you feel better.

Failure is not the end

Try to remember that although you want to do well; failing is not the end of your chances.  In fact, some of the world’s most successful men and women survived many failures.  If it really matters to you, you can always re-sit.
