Family Law is the area of law that deals with families.
Family Law covers areas such as separation, guardianship, access, custody and divorce.
The family has a special place in our constitution: Article 41.3.1 states that ‘The State pledges to guard with special care the institution of marriage, on which the Family is founded and to protect it against attack’.

What does legal advice mean?
Legal advice is any oral or written advice given by a solicitor or a barrister in civil matters. It can include writing letters on your behalf and acting for you in negotiations (talks) with other persons.

Where I can I get free legal advice?
FLAC is an independent human rights organisation committed to equal access to justice for all. FLAC provides a free legal advice service through part-time Legal Advise Centres throughout Ireland in conjunction with Citizens Information Services. These centres are open in the evening and the service is provided by volunteer lawyers or advisors.

Would someone from IAYPIC come with me to the Citizen Information office, i am a bit nervous going by myself ?
If you are a little nevous about going to the citizens advice by yourself, someone from IAYPIC can support you with this. If you are 17 & a half or over, our Aftercare Support & Advocacy Coordinator can support you. If you are under this age, then one of the Children's Rights & Participation Officers can support you. We can offer you support by helping you prepare for the meeting and going with you. Or depending on how soon the meeting is and where in the country you live, we can help you to identify someone else who could support you and go to the meeting with you.
